Although a brick wall can be used as a metaphor for a challenging obstacle or obstruction, you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy Casey makes painting a brick wall on canvas. In this tutorial, Casey will teach anyone using easy to follow steps to create layers of bricks using only four colors (burnt sienna, white, black and beige).
Utilizing a black canvas, Casey begins the tutorial sketching the rows of bricks using a white chalk pencil. You will then learn to use the flat brush and start on one side of the brick and pull towards the center as she instructs to “lift off”. Using the flat brush in different positions provides the clean edges needed with bricks. It is important to leave some of the black showing from the canvas to act as the mortar between your bricks. Once you get to the end of the row of bricks pulling in towards the center, you will then flip your canvas and start again at the edge of your brick and pull towards the center. Casey instructs you how to load your paint brush with more than one color so that each brick has variations within it to make it look more natural looking and non-uniformed as bricks appear.
You will love how easy this technique is and will love having it a part of your toolbox of strokes to incorporate into future paintings. Casey breaks each step down and talks you through her steps so that anyone is able to be successful!
Happy Painting!
