How to make waves
In this tutorial, Casey uses a fan brush to create these amazing waves. By adding a little water to your white, you will load your fan brush with the loosened paint. Start by using the brush at an angle making a narrow line to create the top of the wave and then with light pressure pulling the bristles of the fan brush down and lift off. You can add some splash from the wave by using just the corner of the fan brush and dotting the canvas. You can also make some water by using your fan brush with the narrow part and scrubbing some lines lightly to make the implication of water as shown in the tutorial. It is important to be random in your length and placement of the waves. Once you have your waves created, you can go back and brighten areas of each wave to create the depth and movement of the water.

How to make leaves
After making your tree trunk using a flat brush and the branches with the script liner in black, you will begin to make your leaves with a stippler brush. To create a beautiful tree, you will begin by making your bundles of leaves using plain black paint. You want to use a stippler brush that has pretty stiff bristles and it is an up and down movement. You will make small oblong or circular bundles of leaves throughout your tree branches.
Once you have completed making your bundles of leaves with the black, you will now go back through and create bundles of leaves with red. You do not want to cover all of your black, rather you want some of the black to peek through. You will continue to stipple the red in small bundles. The next step is to mix some orange in with your red and stipple in various areas of the tree to brighten some of the leaves more than others. You want to have a variation in colors to make the tree really pop. The last step is to add a little bit of white to highlight some of the tops of the bundles leaving the bottom darker.
